Initiate and make live a real interdisciplinary between SHS and STIC to meet societal challenges at the confluence of different scientific disciplines.
Created by the CNRS on January 1st 2017, the ambition of this research federation is to create and develop a real interdisciplinarity between different disciplines of the human and social sciences (law, history, sociology, political sciences), and sciences disciplines. and information and communication technologies, in order to be able to carry out scientific projects with a view to meeting major societal challenges. Some of the first themes and challenges identified, which are dealt with later in the document, are already at the heart or emerging of the scientific projects of the member laboratories of the federation; they will therefore be the first areas on which multidisciplinary research activities can lead to the definition and support of interdisciplinary scientific projects.
« Some societal challenges such as mobility, urban systems, environment, heritage and culture are today in strong interaction with the challenges of the information and communication society. »
The first action of this federation will be to mobilize the forces of the units involved around these few strong scientific themes constituting meeting points between societal challenges on the one hand and technological developments on the other.
To meet these scientific and societal challenges, it is therefore a question of creating a CNRS research federation, to design and carry out a scientific project combining different scientific disciplines of SHS and STIC, involving several laboratories within the University. from Versailles -St Quentin (UVSQ):
Business Law and New Technologies, EA UVSQ
Data and Algorithms for the Smart and Sustainable City, EA UVSQ
Center for Sociological Research on Law and Penal Institutions, UMR
Occupations Institutions Temporalities, UMR
Center of Cultural History of Contemporary Societies, EA UVSQ
The federation will also be a means of opening up to other partners of the Paris-Saclay University when the scientific projects carried out will require it and in coordination with the departments and the House of the Sciences of the Man of Saclay in particular. The description of the interaction can be done according to a grid allowing a double reading; one based on the research expertise present in these units and orienting them towards selected societal challenges, the other based on societal challenges and targeting research actions to be carried out jointly on both the ICT and SHS side. We will ensure that interdisciplinary projects are not limited to mutual service delivery between two distinct disciplinary fields, but rather to the co-construction and co-execution of scientific projects, according to three main principles summarized as follows :
Understanding, analysis and modeling of populations (in their history and diversity, their evolution), their environment (geographical, social, virtual, ecological), public policies and their impacts. This implies the exploitation of a large number of heterogeneous data and a modeling of behaviors and uses, according to a scientific trajectory defined as "Data processing - Extraction of knowledge - Quantitative and qualitative analysis - Modeling and decision support".
Co-design new technological, social and legal mechanisms, and advocate new policies. This involves the interdisciplinary design of new paradigms, algorithms and systems and the definition of new legal and social frameworks. It is also a question of studying and encouraging the appropriation by the populations concerned of its new mechanisms and of proposing indicators and tools making it possible to anticipate the consequences of the proposed evolutions, by quantitative and qualitative analysis approaches, prediction and learning. Finally, it will be a question of proposing approaches of dimensioning and management of urban infrastructures taking into account the populations concerned.
Analysis of objectives and performances and anticipation of the impacts of technological, social, territorial and legal solutions proposed and deployed (even partially). This will be on the one hand to propose the right strategies of deployment and to define the right indicators according to the available and reliable data which will have to extract and analyze the relevant quantitative and qualitative knowledge, on the other hand to choose or define the most appropriate paradigms and simulation models.
The actions carried out for interdisciplinarity between STIC and SHS by the federation will thus have a positive impact on the disciplinary research actions carried out in each of the participating laboratories. In particular in computer science, the interdisciplinarity with the SHS will be an accelerator of the collaboration between the aspects "Data" and "Algorithms".
